Start with numbers, then read music

Piano by Number is an easy way for older children to get started playing piano without exposing them to the drudgery of trying to read sheet music at first.

You put numbered stickers on your piano and then play fun familiar songs right away, using a book such as THE BIG BOOK OF SONGS BY NUMBER

Here's what your piano keyboard will look like with the Piano by Number stickers installed:

Like training wheels, the stickers are removed when your child feels confident with the geography of the piano.

The advantage of starting Piano by Number is enthusiasm: children find it very easy to do and experience a rise in self-esteem when they play familiar songs everyone knows.

It is easier to introduce the concepts of reading music when a child feels confident and enthusiastic about the piano.

Here is a comparison of PIANO IS EASY (for younger kids) and THE BIG BOOK OF SONGS BY NUMBER (for older kids.)

PIANO IS EASY contains songs that use only the white keys. BIG BOOK contains some songs that use only the white keys, but in addition BIG BOOK contains songs that use both the white and the black keys. It is easier for younger children to start with the white keys only.

PIANO IS EASY contains lyrics, BIG BOOK does not.

PIANO IS EASY contains the melodies of the songs. BIG BOOK contains the melodies AND chords for the left hand. Chords are groups of three keys played by the left hand, best reserved for when a child is slightly older. Playing with both hands is best when delayed until the child is slightly older as well.
